Ceramic Photo - Residents of Highland Park

If you haven't noticed I hit the ceramic photo jackpot on my last gravin trip.  And I have enjoyed sharing them with you.  I am hoping to get back to the the Pittsburg area because it was incredibly hot that day and I didn't get to look around nearly as much as I wanted to. So on with the sharing.

Here are some wonderful ceramic photos of some of the faces of those that reside in Highland Park Cemetery in Pittsburg, KS.

Funeral services for Ronald Burdick, 22, who drowned in the Mackie Clemens pits east of Pittsburg Monday will be held at 10:00am Thursday in the Smith chapel. Father Paul Alderman will officiate.

The family will receive friends from 7:30 to 9 pm Wed at the Smith chapel. Burial will be in Highland Park cemetery, Pittsburg.

Man Drowns in Strip Pit East of City

Ronald Burdick, 22, drowned in Mackie Clemens pits two and one-half miles east of Broadway on Quincy about 3:20 Monday afternoon. He fell into about 30 feet of water while helping a small boy up a bank.

Burdick, son of Mr. and Mrs. Roy Burdick, 510 N. Joplin, was one of five persons in a swimming party which was spending the afternoon at the pits. The small boy the victim was helping was unidentified and a member of another swimming party.

Sheriff Bill Strukel said that apperently Burdick was just giving the lad a hand to get him up a very steep 15 foot bank when Burdick slipped and fell into the water.

While the drowning occurred about 3:20pm the body was recovered at about 4:35pm after dragging operations by the fire departments.

Burdick was born Oct. 20, 1943 in Pittsburg and was a graduate of PHS.

Carl Willard Burdick, 17, injured yesterday morning in a motor car accident near Pleasanton, which resulted in the instant death of his companion, Reno Noor, 31 of Pittsburg died at 3:30am this morning at a hospital in Ft.Scott....The youth suffered internal injuries, fractures of the legs and severe burns...Burdick was burned as the vehicle burst into flames following the crash...Burdick was born March 14,1915 in Pittsburg and had lived here all his life...Survivors are the parents, Mr & Mrs Dwight Burdick of the home, 510 N.Joplin::three brothers, Earl,Clyde & Roy Burdick, all of the home..and a grandmother Mrs. Fannie Jennings, 605 E.8th....Funeral services will be held at 3:30 tomorrow afternoon at the E.K. Smith chapel with Rev Harry A. Gordon in charge....Burial will be in Highland Park Cemetery...

Pittsburg Headlight 
Wed. 22, 1933 

Carl Burdick, 17 of 510 N. Joplin, Pittsburg, Ks suffered burns, when the truck burst into flames following a truck crash. Reno Noor,31 was instantly killed at 10 o'clock this morning when the fruit-laden truck crashed into a concrete culvert, two and a half miles north of Pleasanton.


The left Pittsburg about midnight for Kansas City to get a load of fruit & vegetables. They were returning to Pittsburg at the time of the tragedy.

Officials who investigated the accident believe that a tire on the truck blew out, causing the vehicle to smash into the culvert.

Burdick was severely burned before he could free himself. Burdick was rushed to a hospital in Fort Scott, Ks.
